The EU has its own Pope: Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, the former French President. It is worth paying attention therefore to the frequent Papal Bulls he issues from on high, not least because of his disconcerting habit (which old men often have) of speaking the truth without a politician's usual care never to speak the truth if at all possible.
