One used to think of the John Major government as an embarrassing shambles. But it took a long time a-dieing, lingering on in state of some putrefaction for several years. The present assemblage of Ministers (one hesitates to describe them as 'The Government') has moved from being merely incompetent to a state of living death without doing any lingering.
